The importance of setting goals

Many people think goals are a necessary evil while others have their goals mapped out in incredible detail.  Why do some people have such disdain for them while others eagerly embrace?  I believe it’s because they see the value in goal setting and with our fast-paced world, now is more important than ever.  If executed well, people can use goals to increase productivity, decrease stress and improve your overall attitude.

When setting goals, it is crucial to be sure they are challenging but attainable.  List out the tasks that need to be done in order to achieve that goal and then pick your end date.  Establish how much time each task or step will take and then work backwards.  If the time frames don’t work, your goal may not be realistic and you may have to adjust the date, what you want to accomplish or how.  Is your goal one that you are working on yourself or with a team?  Perhaps you have an individual one as well as a team or company goal and these are, in my opinion, the most fun.  You can work independently on your part but collaborate with your co-workers to ensure everyone hits the goal.  This builds an enormous sense of pride in not only yourself, but in your team.

As we go into the long, holiday weekend to celebrate the 4th of July, set a goal to enjoy your time with your family and friends.  Try to relax and decompress, perhaps in nature, even if for a short period of time.  Then contemplate on how that made you feel.  First, you set a goal. Second, you hopefully accomplished that goal and relished it.  And lastly, my hope is that you will come away believing in the power and positivity of just setting a simple goal and work from there.
